Oct 20 – 26
Wondai just north of Kingaroy in the South Burnett Region of Qld was where Rural Aid’s Farm Army set up camp for our 6th Farm/Community Rescue for the year. Wondai welcomed us with open arms. We organised a Welcome to Wondai party on Sunday afternoon for our volunteers and the local community where the Brisbane Army Band entertained us and it certainly starting the week off with a real bang.
We had 35 Farm Army volunteers on this Rescue and they worked on 6 farms as well as helping with repairs and maintenance at the showgrounds and race track where we all stayed.
We completely renovated a little cottage on one of the farms including painting the inside and out and repairing the kitchen with a new bench top and cabinet doors. We put in field drains, repaired fences and gates, erected a clothes line that the farmer’s wife had had for 20 years, fixed up a deck and rebuilt the balustrade, a path out to a clothes line, demolished an old shed and put in a path down the side of the house, built a dog kennel and installed water troughs, the list goes on and on. Another great week.
Thanks Wondai for hosting us. Thanks to the Brisbane Army Band and thanks to the South Burnett Shire for all their help. They even put on a thankyou Farmers Big Day Out event to thank the Farm Army where nearly 1000 people came along.
And a special thank you to all the Volunteers. Without you none of this would have happened. You guys are brilliant. The work you did, the connections you made with farmers and the local community and the new friends you made with your fellow volunteers is what Rural Aid’s Farm/Community Rescues are all about. You make a difference in so many ways to the lives of people in these rural communities doing it tough.
